Thinking in numbers rather than chord names helps you think and act more quickly in a lot of scenarios, including learning/reading chord progressions in many keys, transposing, and hearing progressions more easily. And you know, it's also really fun to turn around and tell the rhythm section that the bridge goes from bVII to IV.
